- A new Saudi anti-corruption body has detained 11 princes, four sitting ministers and dozens of former ministers. The detentions came hours after the new committee, headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, was formed by royal decree.
- Lebanon’s Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri resigned on Saturday, saying he believed there was an assassination plot against him and accusing Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah of sowing strife in the Arab world.
- Saudi King Salman removed one of the royal family’s most prominent members as head of the National Guard and appointed two new ministers on Saturday to key security and economic posts, while boosting the kingdom’s young crown prince.
- Islamic State’s self-proclaimed caliphate was on the verge of final defeat, with Syrian government forces capturing its last major city on one side of the border and Iraqi forces taking its last substantial town on the other.
- A U.S. service member was killed in eastern Afghanistan, the military said, without giving details of his identity or the circumstances of his death, which occurred as American forces have stepped up operations against the Taliban.
